LaHood talks gas taxes

How we fund our highway infrastructure is again receiving attention after Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s recent comments at the end of November.  His argument, to raise gas taxes and then index it to inflation, is common sensical and should be enacted right away.  Some people, such as Matt Yglesias, argue that the tax should be pegged instead to construction costs.  Whatever the peg, it’s obvious that the gas tax needs to automatically adjust itself; a pegged solution should also please Congress because, by not having to debate infrastructure funding as much in the future, it will give them more time to debate inane cultural matters.  Here are my previous thoughts on this issue.
